I know I just said this is not a book about people, but I need to introduce you to Gordy and Sandi Janisse; my parents! These two were by far the most influential people in my life. My dad was a man of integrity who always put family first. He had an incredible work ethic, was very personable, and loved to tell a story. My mom was the kindest woman I ever knew who always saw the best in everyone. She was born to bring out the best in everyone she interacted with, which made her the perfect mom and teacher. She was incredibly patient, encouraging, and supportive.
You and dad were the perfect parents for me, and I’m so lucky to have spent the years I had with you. I was such a little asshole at times, but you never gave up on me. You saw something inside that even I didn’t see. Thanks so much for that. I see something great inside each of you and want you to know how much you each mean to me. No matter what, you always believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself, and gave me the strength and confidence to succeed. You and dad provided the perfect balance for me, were the biggest influence for me, and the reason for all the good in my life. The stability and unconditional love you provided were so important to my development.
I'm sure you remember, but when I was diagnosed, I wasn't upset that I was going to die. No, I was only upset that I wouldn’t be able to take care of you and dad in your final years - which is why I moved next door to begin with. I was supposed to hold your hand when you took your last breath. I wanted to protect you, but I now take comfort in knowing that Stephanie, Lindy, Aaron, Patty, Jan, Penny, and so many other great friends and family will be there to take care of you. I would have been happy to die as long as it was one day after you.
