Don't You
(Forget About Me)

A few stories from Dave Janisse

Hi there. Thanks for coming on this journey with me.

This site features stories that I feel best explain what made me, well, me.

The content was taken from a Shutterfly book I created for family and friends, so ignore references to the word book.

This is not my life story. If you are reading this, it means you are very important to me and were a special part of my journey. That said, your name may not appear in here because it is not a book about people, just a collection of stories I wanted to tell. It is also not comprehensive. I feel like it barely scratches the surface, but at least it covers many of the stories that shaped me. Glad we cleared that up.

Writing this was not the original plan though. I spent time, most days the past two years, working on the ultimate hard drive with personal messages I recorded for everyone before symptoms got too progressed, all pictures sorted by year, all family videos named by date and who was in them, all 100 of my music tapes, and so much more. My plan was to give each of you a personalized flash drive tailored to you with a personal message from me. The day I started backing it up to the cloud, there was an accident, and, as I write this, we’re not sure the data can be recovered. So, while we wait, I decided to write down some stories.

I’ve written this whole book using my Tobii Dynavox eye gaze device, selecting one letter at a time by gazing at that letter with both eyes. Painfully slow and even more annoying because my brain is still at 100% speed, so I have to change the way I think, write and tell stories. For example, it took me five seconds to think of what I wanted this paragraph to say, would have taken 30 seconds to say it when I spoke normally, under a minute typing, but has taken 30 minutes to write even though I am quick and on the fastest possible setting. So yeah, I end up not expressing 95% of what I want to say. So very frustrating!

When reading this book, keep in mind that I am writing from my current perspective. If I ever come across arrogant or anything resembling that, please know that it isn’t intended. I think life is a journey and continual learning process. As much as I’ve learned, I remain humble in knowing that I have barely scraped the surface of available knowledge. I love to challenge my beliefs and try to learn something new and improve every day. The little knowledge I do have was largely acquired by making every possible mistake to be made. At some point in my life, probably entirely too late, I learned to never make the same mistake twice. Making mistakes is truly the best way to learn. Just learn and grow from it. If I hurt you in my journey, I am truly sorry. If you helped me learn, I am truly grateful. So yeah, if I brag about an accomplishment, know that I realize that I probably made every possible mistake before getting there and probably had a lot of people teaching me a lot of things to set me up for whatever success I am referring to. In the end, as I write this, I have finally found peace, and I feel nothing but love. I have finally allowed myself to have no regrets because, as the lyrics tattooed on Sierra and my thighs say,”all the mistakes made me who I’ve become,” and I found true happiness in life. If you’re reading this, it means you were part of making me who I am, and I want to thank you for that.
